— By Becky Hand, Licensed & Registered Dietitian

Make a promise to your skin today to keep it nourished and rejuvenated from the inside out! Having healthy skin year-round begins with the foods you eat and drink. To get skin that you will be confident to show off every season of the year, devote some time each day to getting the necessary nutrients to stay hydrated and fight the signs of aging.

Drink plenty of water. While the exact amount you should drink each day varies, no one can dispute the role of good hydration in keeping your skin looking healthy, young, and radiant. Experts agree that when the hydration comes from pure, clean water—NOT soda and fruit drinks—the skin cells rejoice! Aim for six to eight glasses every day.

Limit alcohol.

Sip green tea daily. This beverage contains polyphenols, which have anti-inflammatory properties that protect and benefit the skin’s overall health. Enjoy one or two cups per day.

Avoid simple carbohydrates. Foods such as cookies, pies, cakes, candies, and pastries can increase acne breakouts due to insulin spikes.

Nourish your skin. Eating healthy foods can protect, repair, and slow the aging process. Check out the chart below for the top ten nutrients that provide beauty benefits.

You’re twenty-five without a wrinkle on your smooth, porcelain-like skin. You love to tan (frankly you look better with a tan). Why on earth should you start an anti-aging skincare regimen?

Because you’re not going to be twenty-five forever, that’s why.
The first thing to consider about any anti-aging skincare regimen is that it’s actually a healthy skin regimen. Everything included with a good anti-aging routine is actually good for the skin of any adult.
First and foremost, avoid the sun. If you need a tan, spray one on. The sun causes more damage to your skin than anything else (smoking is a close second). While you may look fantastic when you’re twenty and tanned, when you’re forty—and you will be one day, believe it or not—you’re going to look fifty and start picking up brochures for cosmetic surgery.

Good anti-aging skincare products contain all sorts of fantastic ingredients that your skin loves, including retinol A, vitamins C, D, and E, as well as antioxidants that your skin absolutely crave. Many products also contain other natural ingredients, such as aloe vera and tea extracts. It’s all good and good for your skin, too.

Other than avoiding smoking, the sun, and putting on vitamin-rich lotions and creams, your skin also craves moisture, especially when you do get older. As we age, the natural oils that gave our skin such a healthy glow start to diminish, which is why it is so important to replenish our skin’s moisture with high quality moisturizers.

Drinking plenty of water, getting exercise, eating a healthful diet, and avoiding excessive alcohol consumption are also ways of improving our skin as we age.

Remember, you don’t have to have wrinkles to start treating for them. Anti-aging skincare products aren’t just for those with wrinkles, but for anyone who wants healthy-looking, smoother skin at any age.

Those who have sensitive skin must take extra care and carefully choose the products they use on their skin and their bodies. For instance, many people with sensitive skin must launder any clothing they purchase before they can wear it. They also must be careful to choose soaps, cosmetics, hair products and even perfumes that do not contain specific ingredients that cause their skin to react negatively. Sometimes these people must spend years finding products that do not cause their skin to break into rashes or become red when they take a simple shower.

Those who have sensitive skin tend to be less receptive to trying new products and must choose those products that are specifically designed for their skin type. Quite often before they try a new product they will take a sample from a high end store or from a friend or relative in order to find out if they can use it. The problem is not limited to women though women tend to acquire the condition more often than men. However, there are men who must also use specific types of soap or body wash and laundry detergent.

Most people who have sensitive skin developed it in infancy, but that doesn’t mean it cannot happen later in life. There are many different things that could trigger an onset of sensitive skin. For instance, a woman who had perfectly normal skin prior to pregnancy may discover she can no longer use the same beauty products she did before she became pregnant-the condition is likely to continue even after childbirth. It is impossible to know if you will develop sensitivity to certain products you are currently using, but if you find your skin becoming red or breaking out into hives or acne, it is a good sign your skin can no longer tolerate those products.

As one ages, the skin tends to lose its elasticity. What you end up with is sagging and drooping. This can actually cause one to look older than their years and can even be a major form of embarrassment to many people. If you find that your skin is no longer looking as young as it could, you may want to consider researching what you find for a skin firming solution.

Truthfully, you are going to find a lot of skin firming products available. Unfortunately, not all of them are going to be able to live up to the promises they have made. As a consumer, it is up to you to determine which ones could work for you by looking at the actual ingredients in the products. Of course, in the long run, this is going to save you a lot of money, as well.

One of the main ingredients that you want to look for is collagen. Collagen is actually a natural ingredient that is found in your skin. It provides support to your skin and can help you to bring back firmness into your face. Collagen in the products will be absorbed into your skin, giving it a more youthful appearance.

Another ingredient to look for is elastin. Just like it sounds, this particular ingredient that is also found in the dermis or skin, will help to keep your skin looking firmer. At a certain age, the elastin in your skin may be produced less, which means you skin will begin to look older. By using products with this ingredient, you can prolong younger looking skin.

Even though aging is part of the normal process to go through, it doesn’t mean you shouldn’t age with style and grace. Learning different skin firming techniques is going to help you to look younger, which can mean you can also feel younger. As with anything, however, be sure that you only purchase any products from a reputable business.

Most teens are likely to have some sort of problem with their skin at some point. Due to the fact that hormones are constantly rushing around their bodies and they are getting involved with loads of different activities that might cause them to get dirty, they are likely to get some sort of skin problem at some point. When this does happen, there are many things that can be done to help any teenager to keep their skin as clear as possible. As such, here are a few tips on teen skin care.

The most obvious point to make is simply that keeping your skin as clean as possible at all times will be the best thing that you can do. By having dirty and greasy skin you are going to enhance your chances of having a breakout massively. As such, it is important that you focus on cleaning your skin every single day, both in the morning and in the evening before you go to bed.

Of course, this routine that needs to be simple in order to make it effective. The more you keep to your routine and the more you are likely to stay with it for a long time, and this will help you to keep your skin as clear as possible.

You also need to be fully aware of the different dirty items that might touch your skin. As such, you should make sure all of your clothing is clean at all times, and that your bedding is clean as well. It is no good cleaning your skin only to wear dirty clothes all sleep in a dirty bed.

When you do get any spot, it is crucial that you focus your attention on leaving it alone as much as possible. It is very tempting to pick at spots but this is simply something that will usually result in a worse situation.

Last of all, make sure you are happy and confident in your own skin. As such, if you do have a breakout, you should realise that this is something that most teenagers will go through, and that you are certainly not alone.

Know thy skin
To determine skin’s personality, try this simple test: Wash your face, skip the moisturizer, wait an hour and then take four pieces of transparent tape and place each one in a different area of the thee: chin, forehead, cheeks and across the nose. Gently pull off the tape and observe the sticky side. If it holds flakes of skin, you have dry skin in that area. If it has a greasy print, you have oily skin. Then take a closer look at your face. Do you see a few pimples? You may have minor acne. Do you frequently have a redness or irritation? Your skin is probably sensitive.

Cleanse frequently and faithfully
Always use a cleanser suited to your skin type. If yours is oily or acne-prone, come clean with a liquid, gel formulation. Try Deep Purifying Cleanser or Dermaloge Cleansing Liquid. Dry skin calls for a creamy cleanser that won’t strip the skin. Recommended ones to try are: Orange Blossom Cleansing Milk or Azulene Cleansing Lotion. Combination skin has its own set of concerns: It’s usually oily in the T-zone and the cheeks are dry. What to do? Use Fresh Facial Bath or Facial Cleansing Gelee. If your skin is sensitive, go for tried-and-true cleansers that contain no alcohol and don’t over lather, like Vita- Pure Cleansing Milk or Arnica Facial Wash.

Moisturize religously
Skin of any type needs a barrier between it and the environment; the elements can damage it and age us before our time. What to look for in a moisturizer? Dry skin requires ingredients like hyaluronic acid, sodium PCA and glycerin, commonly known as humectants, to draw moisture from the air to the skin. Ones to try: Herbal Nova Crème or Face Nourisher. Combination skin takes an oil-free moisturizer like Calendula Crème or Citrus Day Skin Care. For those with oily and/or acne-prone skin, a light, oil-free, noncomedogenic hydrating gel will suffice. Try Hydra Gel or Overnight Oxy-Complex. Sensitive skin is extremely fragile.Go for simple formulations in moisturizers such as Daily O2 Optimizing Crème or Skin Recovery Crème.

Exfoliate to rejuvenate
Use exfoliation products to reveal soft, smooth and glowing skin. Exfoliants come in three forms: gentle scrubs that remove surface dead skin, proteolytic enzymes and chemical preparations like alpha-hydroxy acids. AHA’s, such as glycolic or lactic, provide a deeper exfoliation, but caution: AHA use thins the top layer of skin and making it more vulnerable to burning, daily use of sun-protection with an SPF of 15 or higher is a must!
Don’t worship the sun
As the years go by, (and the ozone layer is depleted) doctors are seeing more and more cases of melanoma. It’s always good idea to protect skin from sun damage year round. Use moisturizers with an SPF of 15 during the day like Daily Moisture Crème SPF 15 or Face Protection SPF 15 (especially if you’re using a product with AHA’s).For extended outdoor activity (outdoor sports or a day at the beach) and sun exposure, Use a full-fledged sunscreen that contains protection against both UVA and UVB radiation, with an SPF 30 like Advanced Protection SPF 30. Or stay out of the sun altogether and just use Sunless Tan.

Honor your eyes
Skin around the eyes is prone to fine lines, dark circles or puffiness. In some cases, circles are due to heredity or they’re an indication of illness or lack of sleep. In addition to getting more rest, you can use certain products. Puffiness can be reduced with products containing certain peptides that act as a decongestant around the eye area. Remember to apply eye creams on the bone around the eye, not directly under it, to keep the cream from getting into the eye. Recommended eye products to try: EyeBright Anti-Puffiness Gelee or EyeBright Intensive Eye Crème.
Keep an even tone
Hyperpigmentation can be caused by everything from acne and hormonal changes to burns and sun damage. To even out skin discolorations, look to the ingredient hydroquinone, which acts by breaking up melanin formation. Over-the-counter drug preparations, generally comes in concentrations of 2%. Try Lightening Perfection Crème with Hydroquinone. When teamed with alpha- and beta-hydroxy acids (glycolic or salicyclic acids), hydroquinone can deeply penetrate the skin. Try adding Glycolic Serum. NOTE: skin lightening creams should ONLY be applied directly to the areas of discoloration.

Visit a skin care professional
Facials can stimulate blood circulation and the flow of oxygen to purge skin of toxins imbedded in pores. For the best results, get monthly facial treatments, including deep-cleansing, in which pores are unclogged through exfoliation, steaming, extractions, massage and a mask or glycolic acid, a strong exfoliating peel and hydrating facial to smooth and brighten skin tone.

Let a skin care professional shepherd the way
If you have severely sensitive skin or acne, or special concerns like flesh moles, eczema or extremely large pores, consult a medical professional.

Be committed to thyself
Beautiful skin requires consistent effort and love. It’s all about drinking at least eight glasses of water a day to cleanse your system and making sure your diet includes lots of fresh fruits, vegetables and fiber to keep your body hydrated and rid of toxins. Supplement your diet with vitamins, especially A, C, E and B complex. Do not skimp on sleep.
